Super Mario 64 Fan Unlocks 29-Year-Old Secret Door Without Mods

A dedicated Super Mario 64 fan has discovered a method to open the one-way cabin door in Cool, Cool Mountain without using any mods or hacks. As Super Mario 64 approaches its 30th anniversary, gamers around the world continue to uncover its secrets and new exploits within its enduring code. One fan, in particular, has made impressive progress in this area.

Veteran players of Super Mario 64 are familiar with its secret Stars and hidden doors. Since its launch, this Nintendo classic has been filled with Easter Eggs. Doors, in particular, have often been the key to uncovering many of these hidden features. However, one door has puzzled fans since 1996, as it seemed impossible to open. Located in the Snow World region, near the Mother Penguin's home, a wooden cabin links the slide area to the mountain. The door has a doorknob only on the inside and cannot be opened from the outside—or so gamers believed for the past 29 years.

YouTuber Pannenkoek2012 released a video demonstrating how to open this previously unopenable door in Cool, Cool Mountain without any Super Mario 64 ROM modifications. They explained that another player, known as Alexpalix1 on Discord, used the Mother Penguin exploit to start the process but added a crucial step: a timely turnaround. The player first lures the Mother Penguin near the locked door by grabbing her baby, then jumps over her head, manipulating her hitbox to bypass the door’s invisible wall. Before Mario hits the ground, they initiate a turnaround move, causing Mario to walk toward the door and open it.

Technically, this method works because two movement codes overlap. When the player jumps over the Mother Penguin's head, the free-fall animation activates. However, executing the turnaround move triggers a well-known SM64 glitch that overwrites the free-fall animation with the walking animation code, creating one frame of walking toward the door before landing. This occurs because in Mario games, a turnaround move initiates an immediate walking animation, causing the character to walk in the air.

What's Behind the Unopenable Door in Super Mario 64?

While this technique is impressive, fans should note that it offers no real benefits other than personal amusement. Unlocking the cabin door from the other side doesn’t save time or reveal any behind-the-scenes Super Mario 64 secrets. It’s simply a complicated way to access an already mandatory section of the game.
