Mastering the Lorroakan Boss Fight in Baldur's Gate 3

In Baldur's Gate 3, players encounter the enigmatic wizard Lorroakan in Act 3, accessed through a portal on the second floor of Sorcerous Sundries in the Lower City of Baldur's Gate. While players have the option to align themselves with Lorroakan, many find themselves in opposition due to their choices and moral compass.

Lorroakan's reputation precedes him throughout the game, creating a sense of anticipation. However, with the right tactics, the encounter with Lorroakan need not be overly challenging. Here are some strategies to navigate this encounter successfully.

Strategic Positioning

As soon as the party enters the boss room, the dialogue transitions into combat, leaving no time for repositioning. To avoid being devastated by Lorroakan's area-of-effect spells, quickly move each party member away from one another. Be vigilant for Opportunity Attacks while spreading out, and consider using abilities like Misty Step to create additional distance.

Eliminate Summons

Lorroakan is accompanied by Elementals and Constructs during the fight. It's advantageous to eliminate these Elementals one by one. Focusing on a single enemy is more efficient than depleting the entire group's HP, as it disrupts the enemy's action economy. Ensure that Lorroakan is Crowd Controlled to limit his spellcasting effectiveness. Spells like Blind and Darkness work well, but spells that restrict movement have little impact.

Utilize Counterspell & Silence

Counterspell is invaluable for neutralizing enemy spellcasting. It nullifies the effects of an enemy's spell as long as they are within range. Reserve it for crucial moments when Lorroakan casts potent AoE spells or spells likely to kill a party member. Silence, a lower-level spell, can also be useful. It creates a silence sphere, impeding magic users while allowing melee fighters to maintain pressure on Lorroakan.

Protect Nightsong

Keeping Nightsong alive should be a top priority. While technically immortal, Nightsong's HP can still drop to zero in gameplay. Focus healing efforts on Nightsong rather than party members. Nightsong can handle much of the encounter independently, provided she remains healthy and buffed. Her storyline culminates in a satisfying cutscene upon Lorroakan's defeat.

High-Level Spells and Save Scumming

For a more unconventional approach, consider using high-level spells to your advantage. Lorroakan has relatively low HP, making him susceptible to spells like Disintegrate, Harm and Chain Lightning. Prepare a high-level spell or acquire a Scroll of Disintegrate from the Sorcerous Sundries shop. Start the fight with Nightsong, quicksave (F5), and cast the Level 6 spell at Lorroakan. If it misses, quickload (F8) and try again. With patience, save scumming ensures eventual success.
