Roblox is implementing a new rule that allows the creation and publishing of game content rated 17+

Previously, on the Roblox gaming platform, gameplay experiences were divided into three age categories: for all ages, 9+, and 13+. However, in a statement on the official Roblox blog, it has been announced that a new 17+ category will be added soon. According to the updated age rating system, content for 17+ may include intense violence, realistic blood, moderate coarse humor, romantic themes, inaccessible gambling content, and/or the presence of alcohol. The statement mentions that the fastest-growing age group on Roblox is the 17-24-year-olds, with 38% of their active users daily being over 17 years old in 2022. As a natural evolution, the platform now allows creators to develop content specifically for this audience.

The statement further explains that Roblox aims to model and even surpass the possibilities of the real world. For example, when a family attends a sporting event, there are entertainments for everyone at the stadium. However, some of these areas may be inaccessible to young people. As they grow older, they gain access to these areas, and Roblox wants to replicate this dynamic. Now, creators can offer experiences designed for those who are 17 years old and older, featuring more mature themes and storylines similar to those found in TV shows or stand-up comedy. These experiences may include more violence, blood, or coarse humor.

Players cannot access 17+ content without verifying their age by uploading a government-issued identification document and taking a selfie to match the photo on the document. Roblox states that they delete the document data and anonymize users' identities after age verification.

Roblox emphasizes that creators can now start developing and presenting experiences for 17+ users, aiming for them to be safe, respectful, of high quality, engaging, and fully utilizing the potential of adult-oriented content. Players will begin seeing 17+ content in the main hub of the game in the coming weeks, as stated in the announcement.
